The 2026 WNBA season will begin as scheduled on May 8, as the league is set to go through a full process of expansion draft, free agency, and then the WNBA draft. Players’ salaries will witness a serious growth in the offseason, as more than half of the league will be featured in free agency.
Breanna Stewart set to become highest-paid WNBA athlete
Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson are set to become the highest-paid athletes in the WNBA after the new CBA deal gets executed. As per ESPN analyst Shams Charania, the supermax contract can range from $2 to $2.5 million per year. Stewart and Wilson, who have received a supermax contract, are set to become the highest-paid athletes.
Stewart was under a one-year, $208K deal with the New York Liberty for the 2025 WNBA season. Wilson, on the other hand, was on a 2-year, $400k contract with the LV Aces.
Even though March 10 was the deadline given by the WNBA to finalize the terms to avoid delaying the new season, negotiations took some extra days to be agreed upon. However, the WNBA commissioner assured that there wouldn’t be any delay.
