Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris was in attendance when the LA Sparks hosted the Chicago Sky on Friday. During an in-game interview, Harris shared that this WNBA showdown was a “date night” affair with her husband Doug Emhoff.
Harris, a former District Attorney of San Francisco and the 32nd Attorney General of California, went on to share the traits that she admires most about WNBA players.
“What they are doing to model the height of athleticism, but combining that with what they’re doing to empower so many people who watch them, I love it. I’m a huge fan of the W.”
In addition, Harris praised Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike for displaying “an extraordinary amount of courage” in her leadership role within the WNBA. Aside from being one of the veteran pillars on the Sparks roster, Ogwumike has lived up to her moniker of “Madam President” by playing a pivotal role in this year’s CBA negotiations as WNBPA president.
Over the years, Harris has expressed her support for basketball teams and personalities. In 2023, back when she was in office, she and Emhoff had a wager going on during the Warriors-Lakers playoff series. Since the Lakers (her husband’s team) won that series, the Warriors-loving Harris had to wear a Lakers jersey as a result of losing the bet.
As far as the WNBA is concerned, however, Harris also lauded the players of that league for staying “undeterred” in the face of low expectations.
Nneka Ogwumike Achieves WNBA Milestone in Home Win Against Sky
As fate would have it, Harris bore witness to history as Madam President achieved a milestone on Friday.
That night, Ogwumike became the third player in WNBA history to make 3,000 career field goals. She joined Tina Charles and Diana Taurasi on the extremely short list of WNBA players to achieve this feat.
With Harris and Emhoff watching, Ogwumike finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists as the Sparks blew out the Sky 102-87.
