Sophie Cunningham’s future remains a key question for the Indiana Fever following the 2026 WNBA Expansion draft. The Fever lost guard Kristy Wallace and forward Chloe Bibby to the Portland Fire.
Both players were capable 3-point shooters, and left a gap in the team’s long-range shooting. Cunningham, who is a 37.2% 3-point shooter for her career, can fill this gap when she returns to action next season. Moreover, she is a fan favorite and had grown into an established part of Stephanie White’s rotation last season, before suffering a season-ending MCL tear in August.
Despite her good fit, a question remains around Cunningham’s future with the team as she is an unrestricted free agent this summer. Reporter Robin Lundberg shared his thoughts on the situation in a YouTube video on Friday.
“They have to decide what her (Cunningham) future looks like with the Fever or not in free agency … I think, you know, Cunningham fits the team … her shooting, her toughness, her personality, all fit the team.” Lundberg said. “All indications are that the Fever are looking to run it back … So the changes would be more cosmetic than complete overhauls … I think Sophie is probably the biggest looming question for the Fever.”
Cunningham played 30 games for the Fever last season, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and one steal per game, shooting 46.9%, including 43.2% from 3-point range.
