This past week, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar questioned the idea that Caitlin Clark is the “face of the WNBA.” Interestingly, his Showtime Lakers teammate had a more complimentary tone when he reacted to Clark’s historic performance against the Seattle Storm.
After Clark finished with 10 assists in the Indiana Fever’s 110-107 win over the Storm on Saturday, Mychal Thompson appeared to blast her teammates for holding her back from an even more impressive assists tally.
“Caitlin had 10 assists last night? She shudda had 15 or 16 assists IF her teammates stop missin LAYUPS offa her passes…”
Though the Fever had their fair share of misses in this game, they still finished with 50.0% shooting from the field. After squandering a 17-point lead in the first half, Indiana staged a furious rally in the fourth quarter that was capped off by a go-ahead three by Clark with under a minute left.
CC would finish with a career-high 45 points, allowing her to tie Chelsea Gray at no. 4 on the all-time list of points-assists double-doubles in WNBA history.
In a separate tweet, Thompson labelled this performance as “Iowa Caitlin” and urged the Fever star to play at that high level for the rest of the season.
With the win over the Storm, the Fever improved to 15-10. This keeps them in step with the Atlanta Dream (who have an identical record) and within striking distance of the no. 4 team Dallas Wings (who stand at 16-8).
Is Caitlin Clark the Face of the WNBA? Jemele Hill Responds to Robert Griffin III as Debate Rages On
Over the past few days, more and more arguments have been raised in the debate on whether Caitlin Clark is the face of the WNBA.
After former Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III tweeted on Friday that Clark is deserving of this title, sports writer Jemele Hill delivered a rebuttal.
“I appreciate the nuance in your opinion, but there is a difference between popularity, appeal and being the face of the league. Caitlin Clark is the most popular player in the WNBA, and the biggest draw. She’s not the face because she’s not creating a new standard for winning (yet). She does not have accomplishments that people want to take (yet).”
Hill went on to claim that A’ja Wilson is the “standard for winning” in the WNBA today, as the reigning four-time WNBA MVP is the player that “everyone is trying to match.”
