The WNBA is not taking part in the USA 250 patches plan that was imposed in every other major sports competition in the United States. This year, USA 250 patches were seen on the uniforms from big sporting events such as the NBA Finals and the NFL’s Super Bowl. It’s a national initiative, which was also joined by the NHL, MLB, MLS, NASCAR, UFC and WWE, to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Despite reports suggesting they would wear them, the jerseys used during the recently concluded WNBA All-Star Weekend did not have the patches. Instead, an “American 250” signage was reportedly used to commemorate USA veterans during the All-Star Game. In a post by OutKick reporter Jon Root on X/Twitter on Saturday, Las Vegas Aces center Brianna Turner, who serves as the treasurer of the WNBPA, doubled down on the move.
Some women’s basketball fans and spectators were unhappy with Turner’s comments as they believe they’re not in the best interest of the United States.
“Shameful,” one fan captioned.
Other users on X/Twitter claimed that some WNBA players are better off playing elsewhere given the league’s viewpoints.
Turner is a part of the executive committee of the WNBA’s players association, which is headed by WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike, a Los Angeles Sparks forward. Turner’s comments reportedly came on social media, where she asserted that WNBA players today would have been “breeders or in the fields working all day.” Turner is in her eighth year in the league and her first with the Aces.
Brianna Turner believes the United States is yet to achieve true equality
After the backlash she received for her comments on social media, Brianna Turner told USA Today that she is grateful for what living in the United States has provided her, but the nation is far from reaching “true equality.” It seems as though this is the basis for Turner’s comments about wearing the USA 250 patch during the WNBA All-Star Weekend.
“I’m obviously so thankful about everything in this country. And maybe one day, we will have true equality for everybody. We’re not there yet,” Turner said in the interview.
WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike later revealed that the WNBPA did not play a role in the USA 250 patches not being worn during the annual All-Star event.
