There was a moment between A’ja Wilson and Angel Reese during Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game, which Wilson’s Team Spoon won 129-122, that garnered a lot of attention. Reese drove toward the basket as Wilson guarded her without any conviction. However, as Reese tried a layup, Wilson blocked her shot.
Wilson covered her mouth and gasped as both laughed off the incident. While running back to their positions, Reese tripped over Wilson, making the moment funnier. After the game, Wilson apologized to Reese for blocking her shot. Analyst Robin Lundberg talked about the exchange and the apology, saying that the incident summed up a larger issue with the WNBA All-Star Game.
“I’m not saying that to take any shots at anybody specifically. It’s just the effort in the All-Star game. And this is not a WNBA exclusive thing. It’s become a problem really across all sports, or I don’t even know if you say a problem. The WNBA players get no break really when you think about it. So, you understand it to a certain extent, but you’d like to see a little bit more, just a bit more effort. A’ja even apologized after the game for blocking Angel Reese’s shot accidentally, an apology,” analyst said (TIMESTAMP: 0:36).
“Also, so, she’s sorry for blocking a shot in the All-Star game because nobody’s trying in the All-Star game. You know who was trying in the All-Star game at least to start? Caitlin Clark was trying in the All-Star game. Paige Bueckers definitely noticed that. You going for MVP now? And then Caitlin pulling from deep, and she did that a bunch in the game. Right off the bat, she was super-duper aggressive pulling from anywhere,” he continued.
A’ja Wilson’s apology to Angel Reese
In reaction to the hilarious moment between the two stars, Wilson issued an apology to Reese in the postgame interview.
“Angel was not supposed to do that,” Wilson said. “I was trying to get out of the way. I do not like to block shots during All-Star games. I’ve never had that happen to me, and I’m so sorry.”
A’ja Wilson played 14 minutes and scored 12 points to go with three rebounds and one assist. Angel Reese played nine minutes and had five rebounds and four assists. The Atlanta Dream star did not score, and that might be why Wilson was apologetic.
