In her first season with the Toronto Tempo, Marina Mabrey has been playing the best basketball of her life. It’s no surprise, then, that she’s getting name-dropped in a hip hop track featuring a Grammy Award-nominated rapper.
On Saturday, the Tempo shared a clip of Mabrey reacting to the mention of her name on the Sosamann and Wiz Khalifa track “Hustle Over Luck.” In the first verse of the song, Sosamann raps, “A shooter like Marina Mabrey/McQueen shots got the party faded.”
Hearing the name-drop, an awestruck Mabrey immediately thought of a special request.
“We should play this song when I come out.”
Not long after the Tempo uploaded this clip, Sosamann left a comment on the post, saying that Mabrey “can definitely use the song” in any way she sees fit.

Sosamann’s mention of Mabrey’s shooting is apropos, as the Tempo guard has bounced back from a down season with her former team, the Connecticut Sun. In the 2026 campaign, Mabrey is shooting 45.9% from the field and 40.3% from deep, an improvement from last year’s shooting clips of 36.7% and 27.0%, respectively.
In the Tempo’s debut season, Mabrey leads the team in scoring (21.2 ppg); she’s also the best three-point shooter among all Tempo players who have played at least 18 games.
Toronto (9-10) continues its uphill climb towards a .500 record, but as the expansion team strives to remain competitive, they have a veteran sharpshooter that they can count on.
Marina Mabrey Gets Due Recognition With Eastern Conference Player of the Week Honors
Less than two weeks ago, Marina Mabrey was making WNBA headlines when she tied the league record for highest single-scoring game. On June 25, Mabrey dropped a whopping 53 points in a Tempo victory over the LA Sparks.
Thanks in large part to this performance, Mabrey was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week following the June 22 to June 28 cycle of games.
Mabrey, who puts up 21.2 points per game, also happens to be fourth in scoring this season. Only A’ja Wilson (25.7 ppg), Kelsey Plum (23.9 ppg), and Kelsey Mitchell (21.6 ppg) have higher scoring averages than Mabrey.
