Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey faced criticism on social media after a video of her arguing with the referees went viral. The Tempo made their WNBA debut on Friday, taking on the Washington Mystics at the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
Toward the end of the fourth quarter, Mabrey engaged the referees in a conversation, protesting against a call. A clip of the interaction was shared on social media by X account @ShowCaseShabazz.
“40 seconds of complaining to the ref LMAO,” the account wrote.
The clip gained 100,000 views, with fans flooding the comments section with criticism for Mabrey.
“Marina complained way too much for me. Toronto had 34 free throw attempts. Nothing ever is Marina’s fault, same thing she did at Chicago. Marina was the catalyst for the mess in Chicago that 2024 season, and she demanded a trade and escaped all the blame,” one fan wrote.
“Marina has been yelling at the refs this whole quarter; she can’t even wait a game to crash out,” another fan wrote.
“Marina Mabrey is good on the court…until her little feelings get hurt and she starts crying and complaining about anything and everything. It’s like she thinks she does nothing wrong and everyone is against her, lmao grow up,” a fan said.
“Mabrey is just out there chucking. I think that 1.4 million is weighing down her jump shot,” another fan said.
Mabrey signed a two-year, $2.4 million deal with the Tempo in free agency this summer.
How did Marina Mabrey fare in her first game with the Toronto Tempo?
Marina Mabrey recorded 27 points, seven rebounds and two assists in her first game for the Tempo, shooting 6-for-18, including 3-for-9 from 3-point range. She made 14 trips to the free throw line, converting 12 shots.
Despite her solid production, the Tempo lost the game 68-65, with Sonia Citron leading the scoring for the Mystics, finishing with 26 points on 9-for-12 shooting.
Mabrey was with the Connecticut Sun last season, averaging 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.
Toronto will return to action on Wednesday, taking on the Seattle Storm at home.
