After Historic 53-Point Game, Marina Mabrey Shares WNBA Honor With Natasha Howard

Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey is blooming as of late, causing her to potentially grow into a star. The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish standout has been in the WNBA for years, but only now is she being widely discussed as one of the league’s best scorers. All of this attention was accumulated due to her historic 53-point game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, tying the league scoring record.

Days after her milestone performance, Mabrey was honored by the WNBA as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. She joins Minnesota Lynx forward Natasha Howard for the honor, as Howard is named the Western Conference Player of the Week. For the week, Mabrey averaged 38.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, while Howard tallied 21.0 ppg, 14.5 rpg and 2.5 steals per game.

Mabrey’s 53-point game against the Sparks also saw her tie the single-game record for 3-pointers in a game with nine. She shot an efficient 17-for-28 clip, to go along with six rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of action en route to the 125-97 victory. For Howard, her remarkable outings from the week helped the Lynx win back-to-back games against the Dallas Wings and the Washington Mystics.

Marina Mabrey explained how her teammates helped her perform the 53-point game

During her post-game interview with WNBA reporter Kayla Grey, Marina Mabrey was asked about what allowed her to uncork the 53-point game. Mabrey credited her teammates and their preparedness to face the Los Angeles Sparks. Through that, Mabrey detailed that she had the space to score freely and get out in transition. After all, the Toronto Tempo did have 26 assists in the game as a result of their ball movement.

“ I mean, like I said, we came out ready to play. Our defense led to our offense, and when we can get out in transition, I can get some space to do what I wanna do. So, shout out to my teammates. We did, we got the ball, we got out, they found me,” Mabrey shared. (0:37)
