Chennedy Carter received a training camp contract from the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday. The feisty guard, who hasn’t played in the WNBA since 2024, will be competing for a roster spot in the defending champs’ loaded backcourt.
On Sunday, Carter responded when asked about her potential return to the WNBA:
“Me and my agent went back to the drawing board. … I was away for a year. I traveled to five different countries. … I feel like I’ve grown, matured, and I’ve took time for myself to find out what really matters to me and where I need to be. … So far, it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
In 2024, Chennedy Carter led the Chicago Sky with 17.5 points per game. She also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per outing. Despite the outstanding numbers, the Sky refused to give her a qualifying offer, allowing her to become an unrestricted free agent.
Due to past locker room issues, no team signed Carter in 2025, forcing her to play overseas. She had stints in China, Mexico and other countries while hoping for a return to the WNBA. The Aces gave her another chance as the defending champs looked to add backcourt depth for their veteran guards.
Chennedy Carter Joins Five Other Guards in Aces’ Training Camp
The Las Vegas Aces opened training camp on Sunday with 13 players in the lineup. Led by four-time MVP A’ja Wilson, the team will start its preparation to defend the championship.
Chennedy Carter is one of five other guards who are with the team. Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Jewell Loyd and Dana Evans have guaranteed roster spots. If the Aces choose to add another guard, the competition will be between the veteran Carter and rookie Jordan Obi, the No. 44 pick of the 2026 WNBA draft.
The No. 4 pick in 2020 seemingly has the inside track against the unproven Obi. Carter’s elite rim-finishing ability, an area the Aces sorely lack, will also give her the edge.
In 2024, Carter averaged 65.3% efficiency within three feet, ranking her No. 8 in the league. Carter has the experience, scoring and playmaking skills that have made her one of the talented guards in the WNBA in the past.
