Caitlin Clark’s Team USA teammate Rae Burrell’s future comes under the spotlight as the WNBA expansion draft approaches. Speculations are at an all-time high, as two expansion teams join the league from the 2026 season. The crew of The Women’s Hoops Show discussed the possibilities of draft day and issued serious advice to the LA Sparks’ wing Burrell.
Burrell came off the bench during the 2026 FIBA World Cup qualifying and averaged 3.6 points and 1.6 assists in 9.5 minutes. In the WNBA, she got more playing time, averaging 18.4 points last season, and a career-high 7.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. However, she has just been a shadow of Kelsey Plum on a stacked Los Angeles Sparks roster.
WNBA journalist Jordan Robinson talked about the Sparks’ dilemma in the upcoming expansion draft, as teams are only allowed to protect a maximum of five players. The analyst said:
“Sparks is impossible. That is a really hard job of who you protect because right now, according to this prediction, Rickea Jackson, Cameron Brink, Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby, and Azurá Stevens. But that leaves Rae Burrell. She had an incredible offseason. You pick her in a top pick and offer her a shiny contract and now she is the face of a new franchise. She was coming off the bench for a loaded Sparks team.”
The WNBA reporter also addressed that the team management might try to convince Rae Burrell, but she should leave and find a new home in a new city, and be a superstar. She added:
“Go get your bag and go be the face of the franchise of the Toronto Tempo.”
Burrell had a successful offseason, playing as a central scoring option for the Vinyl BC in the Unrivaled league. She scored 23, 30, and 24 points in the last three games and helped her team make the playoffs.
Rae Burrell’s trade rumors emerge after her social media activity
Rae Burrell even sparked trade rumors a few days ago when she commented on Caitlin Clark’s post on Instagram. The screenshot of her comment was shared on X:
Several fans speculated in the comment section that Burrell might be looking to play with Caitlin Clark on the Fever squad. However, nothing is confirmed yet. Her fate will be decided on the expansion draft day on April 3.
