Former NFL Player Geoff Schwartz Calls Caitlin Clark Coverage “Weird” as Nancy Armour’s Column Sparks Backlash

Nancy Armour’s latest piece on Caitlin Clark has garnered criticism from former NFL player Geoff Schwartz on social media. The 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year has been under the spotlight for her constant verbal scuffles with officials. Even Aliyah Boston seemed unhappy with ref calls in the Indiana Fever’s last loss to the Golden State Valkyries. Schwartz believed that, as the WNBA is just seven games in the season, the attention on Clark was unwarranted.

The former Carolina Panthers offensive guard called out Armour’s opinion article on the USA Today Sports on X and wrote:

“It feels like coverage around Clark will just be weird forever. Players are flopping nightly. Players argue with officials all the time…”

When a user questioned Schwartz about his absence in crucial moments, he admitted that he was not a regular fan of the W but follows every update around the league. He then compared the reporting on Clark with players in other leagues, like the NBA or the NFL, and said the media doesn’t give such opinions that early in the season to her contemporaries.

The foul calls have been a recurring issue in the NBA as well, as several players, like Luka Doncic and Jaylen Brown, have expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating. Some analysts and fans have even called out Clark for crying to the refs for fouls and talking rudely to them during games.

Nancy Armour believes Caitlin Clark’s “tantrums” are the problem

WNBA analyst Nancy Armour, in her aforementioned piece, called out Caitlin Clark for throwing “tantrums” at refs during games. While earlier podcaster Cari Champion felt like refs awarded differential treatment to Clark over other players, giving technical fouls, Armour believed that the guard was “oozing condescension.”

In her piece, the USA Today Sports analyst also mentioned that Clark had a responsibility for being the face of the sport and wrote:

“Clark carries a burden those other athletes don’t have. She is the face of the WNBA and, to a degree, women’s sports. What she does, how she acts, has an impact both on the current league and the players who will be its future. The last thing anyone needs is for kids learning the game these days to think flopping and whining is the way to go.”

Clark and the Fever faced a difficult loss to the Valkyries in the last game, as Aliyah Boston came up short in the clutch. They will look to return to the winning ways against the Portland Fire. While Clark is still far from comfortable with her long-range shooting, fans hope for the Fever to dominate in clutch situations.
