Fever GM Amber Cox rubs salt into stinging Caitlin Clark fans’ wounds with untimely message

Caitlin Clark fans criticized the Indiana Fever GM, Amber Cox, after she reacted to the team’s win over the Portland Fire on Wednesday. Clark missed the game with back soreness. She was scratched from the team sheet a little more than an hour before tip-off, igniting fan outrage on social media.

The Fever won the game while Clark was sidelined and recorded their biggest margin of victory so far this season. On Thursday, Cox reacted to highlights from the win on X.

“ICYMI – we won the game, and these two showed out,” she wrote.

Cox’s message acknowledged Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell’s standout performance in the win. Boston finished Wednesday’s game with 24 points and eight rebounds, shooting 8-for-11. Mitchell recorded 21 points and four assists, shooting 6-for-11. Lexie Hull finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

Fans criticized the timing of Cox’s post. Here are the most noteworthy reactions on X:

“You’re on here being petty and weird instead of in the lab finding us a backup center for AB,” one fan said.

“Funny how you never praise CC, but let’s get real, Amber, I could have picked a handful of HS JV Basketball players and could have won that game you played an expansion team,” another fan said.

“Why don’t you do this when CC brings the game back from the edge and puts us into overtime? You should be fired! Nasty, nasty woman,” a fan wrote.

“ICYMI – I ain’t ever seen a FO fumble promoting their star player as bad as y’all have,” another fan wrote.

“Interesting, when Caitlin plays and dominates, you somehow can’t seem to praise her. You are disgusting,” one fan commented.

According to ESPN and Front Office Sports, the Fever were issued a warning for not initially listing Clark on their injury report ahead of Wednesday’s game. News of Clark’s absence emerged 10 minutes before fans were allowed in the arena.

Addressing Clark’s absence ahead of the matchup, coach Stephanie White said that she did not expect the Fever to get fined.

“Not everybody that doesn’t practice or gets a pro day is on the injury report,” White said. “That happens all the time. And she wasn’t listed on the injury report earlier because we expected her to play.”
