After getting off to an unremarkable start in her rookie season, Azzi Fudd has been turning heads and shredding defenses with her versatile scoring. It’s exactly what her head coach has been looking for from the beginning.
After the Dallas Wings’ 96-66 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on Monday, Jose Fernandez gave props to Fudd for finally unleashing her arsenal on the court. He also credited the rookie for her demeanor as defenders give her different looks.
“She doesn’t get frazzled. She doesn’t get rushed…She doesn’t have a three? Now, people lock up. People are flying by as she gets through her midrange.”
In the blowout victory over the defending WNBA champions, Fudd finished with 19 points on an extremely efficient 8-for-9 shooting from the field, going unblemished on all of her two-point field goals.
This win over Las Vegas is the latest in a streak of prolific scoring performances from Fudd, who dropped 17 in a rout of the Phoenix Mercury and 18 in a loss to the Portland Fire.
Notably, the Wings were also squaring off against the Aces when Fudd got her first career start in the league. She has been in the starting five since that May 28 matchup, and the bump in minutes has given her more runway to establish a scoring rhythm.
On top of this, Fudd has also been contributing on the defensive end, chipping in 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. It’s early in the season, but Fudd is steadily making a name for herself as a two-way asset for the Wings.
“I Felt Really Settled Today”: Azzi Fudd Comments on Latest Scoring Performance After Blowout Win Over Aces
After the Wings-Aces game, Azzi Fudd shared that she was getting comfortable with her role on the Dallas lineup. At the same time, she commended her teammates for their selflessness that night.
“I felt really settled today, and I think everyone did…The way we played out there, I thought the ball was moving and everyone looked super confident.”
Thanks in part to Fudd’s contributions, the Wings have gone 2-0 this season over the Aces, sending a strong statement to the defending champions and the rest of the league.
