The Indiana Fever’s draft choice has come under scrutiny after they decided to pick Raven Johnson at the 10th spot in the first round. The South Carolina Gamecock is drafted as a backup PG for Clark, a lineup loophole that needed to be addressed. However, analyst Jason Whitlock delivered a damning verdict for Johnson and the Fever.
In an Instagram video, Whitlock shared his thoughts on the Fever’s 10th overall first-round pick. He also referred to a specific incident that happened during a 2023 NCAA Final Four game, when the Fever superstar, who played for the Iowa Hawkeyes, waved off Johnson and decided not to guard her on the perimeter due to her dismal 3-point percentage. Johnson shot 24.1% in the 2022-23 season.
Whitlock said:
“Indiana Fever has the best point guard in the history of women’s basketball. We had Allen Iverson – The Answer; they should just call Caitlin Clark – The Reason… Raven Johnson played at South Carolina. If you remember, they’re playing Iowa in the NCAA tournament, Caitlin Clark basically backs all the way off of Raven Johnson because she can’t shoot. She’s been haunted by this and halfway blames Caitlin Clark.”
The analyst also added that the Fever’s choice of the backup point guard did not make sense and was meant to “destroy Clark.” He stated:
“They’re bringing another delusional woman into the Indiana Fever locker room. They’re on a mission to destroy Caitlin Clark.”
Clark was sidelined for the entire 2025 season after suffering a groin injury. In her absence, the team looked towards role players like Odyssey Sims and Aari McDonald to fill her place. That led the franchise to work on that position and acquire someone who can be an efficient alternative to Caitlin Clark.
“I wanted to quit basketball,” Raven Johnson on aftermath of the Caitlin Clark incident
Raven Johnson spoke about the 2023 incident, mentioned above, and how it impacted her. She said that she was bullied and subjected to “racial” criticism by users on social media. In a video shared on X by Alex Kennedy, Johnson responded to why she hated the internet and said:
“That’s the one reason why I hate the Internet now, because of that situation. Like, I got bashed, I got bullied. I got called all these things that I wasn’t… I wanted to quit basketball at that time. I wanted to just go into this little bubble of isolation and just be by myself.”
How the Caitlin Clark-Raven Johnson duo fairs out in the WNBA has yet to be seen. Competing at the college level against each other, they will have to build their on-court chemistry in whatever time they get to play together.
There is no doubt that fans would have high expectations from someone playing as a backup to Caitlin Clark, eyeing a championship run with the Fever franchise.
