Caitlin Clark’s Book’s Author Stirs Fresh Controversy After Revealing WNBPA Has Declined to Comment on Alyssa Thomas’ “Fist to Neck”

When it comes to media coverage of Caitlin Clark, Christine Brennan is a controversial figure, having written an unauthorized biography of the Indiana Fever star. Despite this, Brennan’s latest claim regarding the CC-Alyssa Thomas issue is interesting, to say the least.

On Monday, Brennan tweeted that she contacted the players association to get their thoughts on last week’s altercation, in which Thomas appeared to press her fist onto Clark’s throat during a Fever-Mercury game.

“As controversy swirls over Alyssa Thomas’ one-game suspension, I reached out to WNBPA exec. director Terri Jackson, asking this: ‘Is it punishable to put your fist in another player’s throat, or is it not?’ Players’ union spokesman: ‘The WNBPA respectfully declines comment.'”

On the one hand, this isn’t the first time that WNBA players or their representation has given Brennan less-than-substantial answers. Prior to the release of her book On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports, Brennan came under fire from players who weren’t happy with the journalistic work she was doing.

In September 2024, the WNBPA called for Brennan’s media credentials with the league to be revoked after a DiJonai Carrington interview, in which she asked CC-related questions that appeared to “fuel racist, homophobic, and misogynistic vitriol on social media.”

On the other hand, there’s also the fact that players, analysts, and fans remain split on their opinions concerning last week’s situation. Thomas’ teammates and head coach are upset with how the league decided to impose a one-game suspension for her actions against Clark. Meanwhile, supporters of the Fever star are upset with how game officials neglected to halt action, call a foul, or even review the physicality right after it took place.

Analyst Claims The WNBA No Longer Needs Caitlin Clark: “She Is a Bigger Distraction Than Additive”

As for sports analyst Emmanuel Acho, he is of the opinion that the WNBA has outgrown Caitlin Clark at this point. On his “Speakeasy” podcast this past weekend, Acho claimed that Clark has become a liability, because of all the discourse surrounding how she should be treated by the league.

“The W, at this juncture in time, would be better off without Caitlin Clark. Because she is a bigger distraction than she is an additive.”

Acho thanked Clark for her contributions to the league, but he also claimed that the WNBA already has enough stars (such as Olivia Miles and Paige Bueckers) to survive and thrive.
