Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever suffered one of their most painful losses of the season on Saturday against the New York Liberty. The future Hall of Famer was plagued by foul trouble, paving the way for New York’s late surge to win the game by an 83-75 scoreline.
Clark battled foul trouble for most of the night and picked up her fifth late in the fourth quarter. The Fever were three points ahead with 6:26 left in the game when she fouled out.
After the game, Clark took full responsibility for her role in the loss.
“There were a couple fouls that were just dumb tonight, and that’s on me. I can’t do those,” she told reporters.
Clark was clearly frustrated, as this has been a recurring theme this season. However, she didn’t let the mistakes linger and emphasized the need to improve.
“I need to do a better job getting to the free throw line; those are easy points. Just find ways to make the refs find the same call in return on the other end,” she added.
The Fever guard did what she could before fouling out, finishing with 10 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell had a team-high 21 points.
The Liberty shot 33/40 from the free-throw line, with 21 of those attempts coming in the fourth quarter, compared to the Fever’s 9/15 for the entire game.
Fever coach on Caitlin Clark’s foul trouble
Foul trouble has plagued Caitlin Clark this season, and head coach Stephanie White has focused on a collective team effort to address it.
“We’ve gotta do a better job collectively as a team. Our team defensive positioning has to be better and that can take some pressure off C (Clark),” White said.
Clark, who is the most potent part of the Fever’s offense, did not attempt a free throw on Saturday. Aliyah Boston also did not get to the line. The Fever need to figure things out before the season drifts away from them.
The Fever are 5-5 this season, with three of those losses coming in the last four games. They will now regroup before traveling to Washington to face the Mystics on Monday.
