In the summer of 2025, Sophie Cunningham was a fresh face on the Indiana Fever roster. After an altercation with a Connecticut Sun guard, Cunningham went from new kid on the block to viral sensation alongside Caitlin Clark.
For better or for worse, Cunningham’s altercation with Jacy Sheldon during a Fever-Sun game last year was a turning point in her career. Looking back at that fateful encounter, Cunningham’s mother Paula told ESPN’s Hallie Grossman that a debt of gratitude is owed to Sheldon.
“I tell Sophie, ‘You know, you need to send Jacy flowers. In fact, you should send her candy or flowers every month, because that moment has changed your life.'”
During that Fever-Sun game, Indiana had the blowout win secured with only a minute left in the final frame. However, the Fever’s players did not come away unscathed, as Clark got poked in the eye by Sheldon (who now plays for the Chicago Sky) during the third quarter.
As Sheldon went for a fastbreak layup in garbage time, Cunningham took her transition defense to another level by pulling Sheldon to the ground. This led to a fracas along the baseline, with Cunningham getting physical with Sun guard Lindsay Allen and a host of players and coaches from both teams trying to de-escalate the situation.
Since then, Cunningham’s reputation as a hard-nosed enforcer (and, more specifically, a “defender” of her friend Clark) has led to a surge in her prominence within the WNBA community. A year later, she has figured in one viral moment after another, from her finger-pointing gesture at DeWanna Bonner to her appearance as a UFC ring girl.
“Sophie Cunningham and the Union Get Zero”: Business Analyst Criticizes WNBPA’s Decision to Ban Monetizing of Viral Finger Point
Sophie Cunningham, in fact, has gotten so popular that the WNBPA has had to step in and make a decision on one of her viral moments.
However, in the eyes of sports business analyst Darren Rovell, the players association made a mistake when they decided to ban licensees from monetizing Cunningham’s viral finger point.
In a statement sent to Front Office Sports, the WNBPA said that they “generally do not feature or look to monetize player conduct from a confrontation between our members.”
