“I’m Not Condoning Her Actions”: Sophie Cunningham Sets the Record Straight for Caitlin Clark-Stephanie White On-Court Clash

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White had a very public and animated disagreement during their loss vs Portland Fire. This was their second loss in a row and it was a worrying defeat.

Since then the Fever have bounced back with a win vs the Atlanta Dream. But the heated exchange between Clark and White became viral pretty quickly and remained that way for a while. Both Clark and White reassured their mutual respect and support for each other. They claimed it was just their competitive spirits clashing to achieve one goal – win.

Fever’s Stephanie White has reiterated that there is no problem between the two.

Teammate Sophie Cunningham added her perspective on the sideline spat in her podcast featuring West Wilson.

“Steph and CC are two very competitive people who just want to win and sometimes you bump heads. But it was all out of like good intent of wanting the same thing. At the end of the day, we were not playing good. I’m not condoning her actions. Like I think it there’s room to grow in how you respond to things. But she would say the same thing. And her and Steph are fine,” Cunningham said (5:54).

Sophie continued to share how that is the relationship between Clark and White. She stated that after the incident both of them hugged it out and talked about it. Cunningham said that in pressure situations these arguments are bound to happen and despite that, everything is fine between the two.

“I think media loves to create division where there’s not always division. And so it’s two competitive people who want to win at a high level. I think that’s really all it was. So if you don’t know that, if you don’t know them, was it a bad look? Maybe. But at the end of the day, it’s two people who want to win,” she added.

Sophie Cunningham thinks everyone “hates” Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever

Cunningham talked about how WNBA teams tend to target the Fever. When co-host West Wilson asked if her trash talk might also be the reason for the teams targeting them, she agreed. She also talked about how Clark gets targeted because of all the attention Fever gets.

“First of all we are circled on everyone’s roster right or like everyone’s game schedule we are the one circled. We are the only team who has all national nationalized televised games and just like people hate us and I get that like I hate other teams too. So that’s nothing new,” she said (1:59).

She also believes that with all the coverage, the Fever also need to play better. In addition, she said that they should be winning the game they have lost so far. Cunningham also admitted that she prefers a lull at this time of the year rather than closer to the playoffs.
