Becky Hammon has been a coach since 2014. She started her career as an assistant coach to legendary Gregg Popovich at the San Antonie Spurs. She then took over as the head coach of Las Vegas Aces in 2022. She has since won three WNBA championship and also won the coach of the year in her first WNBA season.
She is known for her fiery personality and straightforwardness. She often has unwavering opinions and unfiltered basketball takes. Hammon once shared her opinion about the type of players who can lead their teams to win championships. According to her, if a team’s best player is short, the team is highly unlikely to go all the way.
Becky Hammon said that she does not see Knicks in that top tier. She called Jalen Brunson “too small” and believed that they don’t have one “A-dude.” Hammon gave the examples of Allen Iverson, John Stockton and Steve Nash who couldn’t win the NBA title. She also talked about Jalen Brunson and how he is a “hell of a player”. Only exception she had was Stephen Curry. Now as Jalen Brunson has led the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals, Becky Hammon has been facing a lot of pushback about her opinion. She recently reacted to that.
“I said what I said. If he proves me wrong, he proves me wrong,” Becky Hammon replied to the criticism she has been getting after New York Knicks’ success. If Jalen Brunson leads the Knicks to the NBA title, Hammon might face more pushback. However, her words still seem that she wouldn’t have much of a problem in being proven wrong. On the flip side, if Knicks fail to win, Hammon’s take wouldn’t sound that wild.
Fans react to Becky Hammon’s reply after Jalen Brunson and Knicks reach NBA Finals
Fans were divided with Aces head coach’s opinion. They continued to criticise her for the debatable comment.
“I respect the honesty though..at least she’s standing on it instead of backtracking now,” one fan expressed.
“She wasn’t wrong cus this ain’t even the same team. If they didn’t go trade for KAT they would’ve never made it this far,” one fan said as Hammon had made the comment earlier.
“Being wrong and still standing 10 toes is a wild hill to die on,” one fan strongly disagreed.
“Saying small guards don’t win is historically lying. That is like saying Isiah Thomas and Van Fleet don’t exist. Her first point was the knicks wouldn’t be top tier. Back to back ECF and going to the finals this year. You can’t be more top tier than that atm. Then she threw it directly on Brunson’s head saying he can’t. For whatever reason she hates the knicks or click baiting. Either way she can STFU because that is a hater take,” another fan stated in anger.
“He’s not gonna win a championship so she’s right,” one fan agreed.
“Respect to her for not saying “well what I meant was” like everybody else in the media does,” another fan said.
“He already proved you wrong and you doubling down,” one fan was in disagreement.
