Reporter Annie Costabile has found herself entangled in the Caitlin Clark discourse raging all over social media. On Tuesday, Costabile (who writes for The Athletic) drew the ire of Clark fans after she reposted an article asking whether CC was trying to “bend the WNBA to her will.”
A day later, netizens called out Costabile for supposedly doing an about-face on her CC stance. After Alyssa Thomas got too physical with Clark during Wednesday’s Fever-Mercury game (with Thomas’ arm seemingly pushing down on Clark’s throat), Costabile criticized the referees for letting the sequence go uncalled and unreviewed. In response to this, one netizen rebuked Costabile by referencing the “bend the WNBA to her will” article that she’d previously shared.
“Don’t y’all ever get tired? Like damn. I’m tired for you guys,” Costabile fired back.
Another netizen called Costabile’s recent tweet “ironic,” prompting another stinging response from the journalist.
“I get dragging me gets the engagement up. Can’t knock the hustle. Keep it up.”
The generational star that she is, Clark has drawn both fierce support and scathing criticism from all around the WNBA community. For better or for worse, her fanbase has gone to great lengths to defend her, engaging in spirited conversations with one sports personality after another.
Whether or not Costabile herself is a huge fan of Clark is immaterial at this point. It doesn’t look likely that her feisty exchanges with CC’s supporters will dwindle any time soon.
“It Was Egregious”: Fever HC Stephanie White Slams Officiating in the Wake of Caitlin Clark-Alyssa Thomas Sequence
The Mercury ended up defeating the Fever 111-109, dashing Indiana’s hopes once again of building a winning streak.
As if this outcome weren’t infuriating enough for Fever head coach Stephanie White, she had a bone to pick with the officials after the Caitlin Clark-Alyssa Thomas sequence. In the post-game media session, White minced no words in her criticism.
“It was egregious, the fact that it was a no-call…I brought it to the attention of the officials at halftime, yet we still had 11 fouls in the fourth quarter to their two fouls.” [0:17]
White added that it was “utterly disrespectful” for the officials to not call a foul in that situation.
