“Where is Your Column About Paige Bueckers”: Caitlin Clark Fans Call Out WNBA Reporter’s “Hostile” Article After Fever Star Opposes Tech For Clapping

Caitlin Clark’s fans were fuming after WNBA reporter Annie Costabile aggregated a column from The Athletic’s Brian Hamilton on Tuesday, questioning whether the Indiana Fever superstar “controls the spirit of the sport.”

In that article, Hamilton broke down Clark’s rant against referee Gerda Gatling for issuing a technical foul against her for “clapping.” In her post-game comments, the Fever guard said it was “ridiculous.”

Clark told Gatling that it appears she doesn’t appreciate “competitive” basketball, which was just “facts” and the “reality” of the situation, asserting that she had been wronged. Hamilton claimed that in doing so, Clark “sketched out” her version of an acceptable norm in the WNBA.

“In fact, players don’t get to proscribe those facts and that reality … unless, of course, a league capitulates, and then they more or less do,” he wrote. “That’s an equilibrium we’re all familiar with in other sports. Maybe that’s what she’s after now.”

“Because without a feint to diplomacy, Clark sketched out her vision of what is acceptable in the modern WNBA. An official issued a call, and she raised her hand like Neo stopping bullets in “The Matrix.” Full stop, in her mind, for whatever is happening to her this season. What is usually a perfunctory and quiet process for appealing technical fouls is now something more. She drew a line and effectively dared the league to tell her to step back from it.”

Hamilton also cited Clark’s rival, Angel Reese, who picked up her fifth technical on the same night and, like her Fever counterpart, is three technical fouls away from an automatic one-game suspension. Both stars’ teams have appealed to the league to rescind their technical fouls.

Hamilton called the duo “influencers” in his column, insinuating that they are using their power to dictate to the league how the game should look rather than the other way around.
Costabile promoted the column via X, calling it a “must-read” article.

After reading Hamilton’s seemingly accusatory column, Caitlin Clark’s die-hard supporters had had enough of the think pieces that single her out.

One fan compared the situation to Paige Bueckers’ technical foul from May 23 against the Dream for clapping getting rescinded by the WNBA after her complaint and questioned whether Costabile or Hamilton wrote a column about it.

Caitlin Clark keeps breaking records amid scrutiny on her behavior

Much has been made of Caitlin Clark’s on-court behavior, whether it’s her run-ins with referees, altercations with coaches, or frustrations with her teammates failing to execute. Several viral think pieces have been written since the 2026 season began, which could take a mental toll on any player, not just in the WNBA, but in any major sports league.

However, Clark hasn’t let that affect her as much. The two-time All-Star keeps breaking records in almost every game. Currently, she’s on an all-time streak of recording the most 20-point and five-assist games in history.

On Monday, in the 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury, Caitlin Clark finished with 24 points and nine assists, recording her sixth consecutive 20-point, five-assist game. She will have a chance to make it seven in a row on Wednesday when the Fever and Mercury meet again.
