Caitlin Clark was not included on the WNBA’s poster celebrating 30 years of its existence. Many fans were upset that the Fever star was left out, but sports business analyst Darren Rovell said the reason behind Clark’s exclusion was Clark herself.
“The reason why Caitlin is not on this poster is…. you ready? …. Caitlin Clark herself,” he tweeted on thursday. “Other than Nike, Clark allows licensees like Wincraft, who makes this, to only use her name and number. Not her likeness.
“Moving on… the “disrespect” card was fun for a day,” he added sarcastically.
Viewership and attendance numbers have skyrocketed since Clark’s arrival in the league, which is why many fans were surprised she was not on the poster.
The poster featured 20 players – A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, Nneka Ogwumike, Napheesa Collier, Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart, Angel Reese, Flau’jae Johnson, Sophie Cunningham, Rickea Jackson, Aneesa Morrow, Veronica Burton, Marina Mabrey, Shakira Austin, Bridget Carleton, Becky Hammon, Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Dawn Staley, and Teresa Weatherspoon.
Jason Whitlock reacts to Darren Rovell’s Caitlin Clark claim
Outspoke analyst Jason Whitlock had a two-word response to Darren Rovell’s claim.
“Ruh roh,” he wrote.
Fans were confused about what Whitlock meant by that reaction and wondered whether he was defending Clark or agreeing with Rovell.
Whitlock has kept a keen eye on incidents involving Clark this season. At the start of the season, Whitlock said Fever HC Stephanie White is not the right coach for Clark and questioned the treatment of the Fever guard by the team management and officials.
However, his stance has shifted slightly over the course of the season. He claimed to have noticed a shift in Clark’s body language, which did not sit right with him. Since then, in addition to criticizing White and the Fever, he has also blamed Clark for her behavior.
After Wednesday’s incident between Clark and Alyssa Thomas, Whitlock claimed that Clark “quit on her team”.
He also believes that White is not utilizing Clark properly because she “hates” the Fever guard.
