“An Extraordinary Amount of Incompetence”: Jemele Hill Issues Stern Reality Check for WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Ahead of All-Star Weekend

Cathy Engelbert has come under fire from the media after she reportedly ghosted Dan Patrick last week after promising an interview. Her leadership and decisions about Caitlin Clark’s treatment in the league have been under scrutiny. Even Congress sent a letter to the commissioner, asking her about the growing physical hostility in the WNBA, especially towards Clark. And Jemele Hill added to that argument.

On her show, “0Flagrant and Funny w/ Cari Champion & Jemele Hill,” the analyst called her out for avoiding important questions. She believed that it was a bad look for the WNBA when she canceled the interview and also issued a warning before the All-Star Game, where Engelbert will have to face the media.:

“The reason was that she wasn’t allowed. I thought ‘allowed’ was an interesting word choice. You’re the commissioner of the league. … I just know Cathy better think of something because the WNBA All-Star weekend coming up and she is going to be asked about this issue repeatedly. If she does not address this at WNBA All-Star weekend, then that would be an extraordinary amount of incompetence.”

Engelbert’s reluctance to appear publicly and answer questions about the league earlier irked conservative college basketball analyst Dan Dakich, who also called her out. The commissioner has seen major changes in the league during her time, including a historic CBA deal that changed the league for the better.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reportedly didn’t want to suspend Alyssa Thomas

Talks about Cathy Engelbert’s take on how the league has been treating Caitlin Clark, especially on the court, have been persistent. The Indiana Fever guard has been almost the sole reason the WNBA has seen a surge in viewership and an influx of marketing deals.

That has put even more attention on the argument that the league should intervene to protect such superstars. Some sources, according to Sports Business Journal, said that NBA commissioner Adam Silver had to implore Engelbert to suspend Alyssa Thomas and elevate her foul to a flagrant 2. The SBJ wrote on X:

“Multiple sources told SBJ that Adam Silver implored WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to reverse course and suspend Alyssa Thomas.”

The All-Star Weekend is scheduled for July 25-26 and will attract major attention from around the world. Engelbert would have to be ready to answer any questions raised during press sessions.
