NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar questioned on Wednesday whether the Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark should be labeled the “face of the league.”
His comments quickly drew reaction from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy. He strongly disagreed with the Hall of Famer’s stance.
“Lets keep in mind Caitlin didnt ask for this She’s never said she was the face of the league. She’s always showed respect for those who came before her. She could squash this league like a bug if she started her own league. When she was asked to do NBA 3pt contest she said she wanted to do WNBA one 1st. She has fought for players salaries. But she is by far the most popular player in the league by every metric possible. Was it disrespectful to past tennis players when Serena and Venus instantly became faces of women’s tennis or Tiger with golf? The market dictates who the face of the league is and it’s clearly Caitlin. This argument makes zero sense and is just steeped in jealousy and stupidity” – wrote Portnoy on X on Wednesday.
Drawing comparisons to other sports, he questioned why Clark’s situation should be viewed differently.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Questions Caitlin Clark’s Position
Abdul-Jabbar shared his thoughts on the ongoing discourse surrounding Clark, arguing that giving one player that title this early is unfair to the many stars who helped build the WNBA.
“Clark is a very good, possibly even a great player, but calling any one player the face of the league, absent the sort of on-court and cross-platform dominance of a Michael Jordan or a LeBron James, is an insult to an awful lot of great players.” – he said, as per Yahoo Sports.
The debate has become common since Clark entered the WNBA. Her arrival has coincided with high television ratings, sold-out arenas and increased national attention for the league.
At the same time, we can’t rule out that established stars such as A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and others didn’t help in building the foundation for the WNBA’s current growth.
Clark has largely stayed out of the debate herself. She has repeatedly credited players from previous generations for helping grow the league while continuing to focus on her play with the Fever.
Still, as the discussion around her influence continues, opinions remain divided over whether being the league’s biggest attraction makes her its undisputed face.
