The South Carolina Gamecocks and the UConn Huskies rivalry has been a highly anticipated affair in college basketball, but A’ja Wilson believes it’s still early to consider them true rivals. Led by two of the most experienced coaches in the scene, Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley, UConn and South Carolina, respectively, also have some top talents in the country.
Wilson was featured in a recent conversation with USA Today Sports, where she talked about the UConn-South Carolina rivalry. She said:
“I don’t necessarily think it’s a rivalry, I think UConn has beat us too much for being a rivalry, but I think it’s always guaranteed great basketball.”
Wilson was also part of the Gamecocks squad during her college days. However, the Huskies have a comfortable 11-5 lead in the rivalry, which led the 3-time WNBA champion to believe that UConn has a big edge in this rivalry. SC would have to better their head-to-head record to be considered on the same pedestal.
However, Wilson highlighted an important point of such anticipated matchups: bringing more eyes to the sport. She added:
“I think that is what brings people and brings the eyes is that you’re putting out the best product and I think that’s what you see when UConn and South Carolina play against each other. I don’t think it’s necessarily a rivalry.”
Even though A’ja Wilson’s last college game, for the Gamecocks, was against the Huskies, which they lost 59-90 on March 26, she has become one of the best hoopers in the pro scene. She is the only player in the league to win the scoring title, league championship, Finals MVP, regular-season MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
A’ja Wilson joins Team USA’s training camp in Phoenix
A’ja Wilson joined the national team’s training camp for the first time after she led Team USA to a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The two-time Olympic gold medalist joined the national team from March 29 to April 2 in Phoenix, amid a highly anticipated Final Four event.
Wilson’s presence will surely help the national team get more attention before the 2028 LA Olympics. Meanwhile, the LV Aces center will also focus on the upcoming expansion draft and a new season, as the defending champions prepare to grab another championship in 2026.
