Kathleen Swinney: Childhood Sweetheart to Life Partner

They say that behind every successful man, there is a remarkable woman. This is especially true for Dabo Swinney. The Clemson Tigers Football Team coach is married to Kathleen Swinney.

The couple has been married for over 30 years. Kathleen Swinney is known for her philanthropic work and active involvement in different social causes, such as breast cancer awareness campaigns.

Mrs. Swinney, also known as the “First Lady of Clemson,” plays a significant role in her husband’s career as the head coach.

It all started for the couple when Dabo finally got together to ask Kathleen for a dance in the seventh grade. Kathleen shared a glimpse of their life back then with us while speaking about her husband.

“We always kind of liked each other, and when I was old enough to date in high school, we did,” she said gushingly about her husband. Coach Swinney’s wife also spoke about how some aspects of her husband did not change from then to now.

“Just exactly the way you see him today is exactly how he was back then. It’s not like he was a shy kid and evolved into this new man. He was just outgoing and very competitive,” shared Kathleen while speaking about Dabo’s personality.

At the football academy, Kathleen’s presence surely uplifts the young athletes’ spirts. We can say that she is a passive observer of Dabo’s career while being the strongest pillar for her husband.

Clemson Tigers’ connection with Swinney’s family goes way beyond the head coach and his wife. The pair has three sons together: Drew, Will, and Clay.

While each son actively participates in sports at their respective schools, Will has chosen to play under his father back at Clemson, even after receiving offers from other schools.

One of the reasons why Kathleen actively takes part in philanthropic work, especially breast cancer awareness programs, is that she faced a 90% chance of developing breast cancer due to genetic factors.

Lady Swinney went through a double mastectomy to reduce her risk to a mere 1%. Moreover, the courageous lady went through a hysterectomy to minimize the chances of ovarian cancer as well.
