While Brendan Sorsby was cleared to take the field – after serving his suspension – for the upcoming college football season, new complaints filed by the Big 12 as well as the NCAA have now put the Texas Tech quarterback’s future in doubt.
According to reports, the Big 12 is not seeking any damages from Texas Tech, but is simply asking the Court for permission to sanction the Red Raiders should they decide to play Sorsby.
Should the Big 12 be granted the injunction, Texas Tech will face potential consequences for fielding Sorsby, despite Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s letter to the conference, warning it of action for interfering in the Sorsby matter.
One possible scenario, as illustrated by insider Ross Dellenger, states that Sorsby now stands at a crossroads. If the Texas Tech star decides to suit up in Week 3 for the Red Raiders, the team could incur potential sanctions, including a ban from the Big 12 Championship Game.
However, if Sorsby changes his mind and decides to go for the supplemental draft, he may not have ‘access’ to it since the supplemental draft is usually reserved for players who have run out of college eligibility.
Brendan Sorsby does not fall under the ‘out of eligibility’ category as the injunction approved by the Lubbock County Court reinstated his final season after the NCAA’s proposed ban for violating its anti-gambling policies.
If the Big 12’s injunction against Texas Tech and Texas AG Ken Paxton is approved, Sorsby now faces a unique dilemma.
Kansas Attorney General ‘Ready to Assist Big 12’
Following the Big 12’s complaint seeking a preliminary injunction to enforce its rules against Texas Tech, multiple Attorney Generals, including Kansas, Oklahoma, and Utah, have now filed letters supporting the Big 12’s move.
In the statement put out by Kansas AG Kris W. Kobach, he expressed support for the Big 12’s fight to sanction Texas Tech, saying:
“The Big 12 should not be intimidated by the Texas AG’s Office. The Kansas Attorney General’s Office stands ready to assist the Big 12.”
Meanwhile, the NCAA also filed an emergency motion for an expedited ruling in the Brendan Sorsby case.
