As the 2023 college football season advanced into its ninth week, a new cadre of HBCU stars emerged, captivating audiences with their exceptional on-field exploits. Their dynamic plays, whether game-changing touchdowns or staunch defensive stands, have set them apart as the cream of the HBCU crop.

Week 9 not only celebrated their brilliance but also underscored the depth and richness of talent that historically black colleges and universities continue to nurture and present on the national stage.

Offense: Davius Richard, QB, North Carolina Central

Davius Richard’s remarkable showing against South Carolina State University was a testament to his prowess as a dual-threat quarterback.

Completing 18 of his 27 passing attempts, Richard unleashed a barrage, accumulating a staggering 352 passing yards with a notable long completion of 60 yards. His arm talent was evident with five touchdown passes, albeit marred slightly by a single interception.

Yet, Richard didn’t just restrict his brilliance to the air.

On the ground, he carried the ball five times, racking up 26 yards and finding the endzone twice with his legs. His instrumental performance was pivotal in leading NCCU to a significant victory and marked a personal milestone as it was the first time Richard triumphed over South Carolina State.

Defense: Terrell Allen, EDGE, Tennessee State

Terrell Allen’s performance against Lindenwood University was sensational, acting as a linchpin in Tennessee State’s defensive strategy.

With 10 tackles, seven of which were solo efforts, Allen was an omnipresent force on the field, consistently breaking through Lindenwood’s offensive line. His tenacity was particularly evident in the backfield, as he recorded an outstanding 6.5 tackles for loss and a remarkable 4.5 sacks.

Moreover, his knack for playmaking was highlighted by two forced fumbles, crucial in shifting the game’s momentum. Allen’s undeniable impact was instrumental in securing a much-needed victory for Tennessee State, solidifying his status as a defensive powerhouse.
