Stefanos Tsitsipas’ title defense at the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships came to an early end, as the Greek former World No. 3 was ousted from the ATP 500 hardcourt event by Ugo Humbert from France in the very first round. Tsitsipas, a two-time Major finalist and a 12-time career singles titlist, is now set to drop outside the ATP top 40. The 27-year-old hasn’t found himself in such a position in almost eight years.
On Tuesday, February 24, Tsitsipas faced 2024 Dubai champion Humbert, and the Frenchman was gifted the first set by a rather generous Greek who faltered on serve in the deciding game. In the second set, the former No. 3 had break point opportunities against his 37th-ranked opponent, but spurned them, and once more, his serve let him down at a crucial juncture, as Humbert capitalized on the situation ruthlessly, ultimately winning the contest 6-4, 7-5.
Tsitsipas is currently the World No. 30 in the ATP Tour’s official singles rankings, but is guaranteed to find himself outside the top 40 once the new rankings are published on the coming Monday. In the live rankings, the Greek currently sits at No. 42, but his exact new official ranking will be determined by subsequent results spanning Dubai and other ongoing ATP tournaments in Acapulco and Santiago.
No matter what happens, the last time Tsitsipas was ranked outside the top 40 was in May 2018. At the time, the Greek, who was only 19, was ranked World No. 43.
Ugo Humbert Reflects On ‘Big Battle’ With Stefanos Tsitsipas In Dubai
27-year-old Humbert was delighted with his first-round win over Tsitsipas and in the aftermath of the result, he briefly reflected on the match, saying:
“I think today, it was a big battle. We both served very well, and I had just a few opportunities and I did it, so I’m super happy. It’s nice to come back to play again on this beautiful court. I have such a nice feeling when I play here and it’s nice to be in second round.”
Humbert, who himself is up to No. 34 in the live rankings, is set to face another former Dubai champion in Andrey Rublev next. Meanwhile, for Tsitsipas, results simply have to improve at the upcoming tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami if he wants to be seeded at the biggest men’s tennis tournaments in the future, including the Majors.
While the Greek began the 2026 tennis season promisingly at the United Cup, his results since then have been underwhelming to say the least. He did reach the quarterfinals in Doha though, where Rublev defeated him in straight sets.
