Former American tennis player Nick Monroe recently weighed in on Serena Williams’ on-court mannerisms following her return to tennis, explaining why she is the perfect model of player-friendship. The latter is currently focused on her upcoming performance at the Wimbledon Championships.
Williams initially retired from the sport in 2022 after competing at the US Open; however, after a four-year hiatus, she has returned to the court. She opened her return at the HSBC Championships doubles tournament alongside Victoria Mboko, and after a withdrawal due to the latter’s injury, she competed at the Berlin Champions doubles game, where she teamed up with Karolina Muchova. They faced an early loss in this game against Erin Routliffe and Giuliana Olmos.
Most recently, she and her sister, Venus Williams, were handed their Wimbledon wildcards and are currently the talk of the entire tennis community. The 44-year-old’s on-court mannerisms were recently discussed by Monroe on the latest episode of the Big T Podcast, which also featured Brad Gilbert and Danielle Collins. Revealing what the other players on the court had to say about Williams and why she is the ideal player-friendship model, he said:
“I mean I look at Serena Williams. You know, I was speaking with some of the players there in Queens and they said, “Yeah, it’s it’s amazing having Serena here, but the only time we see her is when she’s on the practice court, right? She’s on the practice court and then she leaves. She’s not hanging out in the lounge and hanging with the players and, you know, she’s there. It’s a business. She’s has her family as well, but she’s also there to win. So, she’s gets her business done and gets out of it,” said Monroe in the podcast.
Serena Williams made her feelings known about her second match after her comeback
Serena Williams’ first match was at the Queen’s Club, and after its sudden end, her second appearance on the court following her comeback came at the round of 16 of the doubles of the Berlin Championships. Following this game with Karolina Muchova as her partner and their loss against Erin Routliffe and Giuliana Olmos, the 44-year-old sat for a post-match press conference, where she asked how she felt on the court during her second match following her return.
In response, she opened up about how it went for her and what she learned from the match.
“Honestly, I felt pretty good out there. I felt actually more nimble and like more sturdy and quicker than the first match in Queens. Um yeah, I felt overall I felt I felt pretty good, you know, just physically and quickness, which I think you need a lot of quickness on grass,” said Serena Williams at the press conference.
Further in the interview, she was asked about how she felt after seeing her daughters in the crowd. Replying to this, she added:
“It was really fun. I saw them. One was lot very active and I think the other one was trying to calm her down. It made me smile. Otherwise, I would have been a little bit more on edge.”
Serena Williams recently offered glimpses of training at Wimbledon with both her daughters accompanying her on the court.
