Alexander Zverev issued a confident statement after beating Vit Kopriva in the first round of the Terra Wortmann Open on Tuesday. While assessing his play on grass, Zverev admitted that although it is not his best surface, he has posted strong results in the past, including a victory over Roger Federer.
Zverev defeated Federer 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3 in the semifinals at Halle in 2016. He went on to lose to Florian Mayer in the final. In his press conference after beating Kopriva 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, Zverev said defeating Federer at his “peak” gave him confidence that he could succeed on grass, which many deem to be his weakest surface.
“It’s definitely the surface where I’ve probably had the least success in my career. But I also know that I can play good tennis here, and I know I’m capable of playing well on this surface too. I’ve beaten Roger Federer here before, when he was, let’s say, at the peak of his career, so… I know I can play good tennis on this surface too,” Zverev said.
Zverev’s statement caught the attention of fans, who quickly called him out on social media:

Zverev returned to action at Halle, his first tournament since winning the French Open.
Alexander Zverev opened up about whether it is difficult for him to compete in Halle after a tournament like Roland Garros
At the press conference, Alexander Zverev addressed several questions about his Grand Slam win and his performance at the Terra Wortmann Open. A reporter asked him if he found competing in Halle a little difficult after his time at the French Open.
“well, not difficult. But of course, as we’ve all said, I’ve had a lot to do. I just have to do a lot off the court. But again: these are all positive things, and if I’m a bit tired from it now, I’m more than happy to put up with that, because these are all things that have to do with something positive. And that’s fine. Yes, maybe I’m a bit more tired. Yes, maybe I’ve done a few extra things, but again: I’d love to do that after every Grand Slam tournament,” said Alexander Zverev.
The top-seeded German will face Yannick Hanfmann in the second round.
