Serena Williams has been at the center of considerable speculation in terms of a possible return to competitive tennis. The rumors started after the former World No. 1 and 23-time singles Major champion re-entered the ITIA’s official drug anti-doping testing pool of athletes late last year. Recently, Alycia Parks, the current World No. 85 hailing from Florida, revealed that she recently practiced with Williams and also made quite a bold claim about the legendary American’s potential comeback.
Speaking to Tennis Majors, Parks briefly touched on how the 44-year-old is helping her out as a mentor, saying:
“I actually practiced with her last Monday. And I messaged her yesterday. She’s definitely a good mentor to me and she’s helped me a lot, especially in my practices.”
The 25-year-old also spoke positively about the shape Williams is in right now. According to Parks, the 73-time career singles titlist would be quite competitive even now on the WTA Tour if she does happen to make a comeback. Parks added:
“She is in great shape. So I think she would kill it on tour.”
Serena Williams Neither Confirmed Nor Denied Comeback In Recent Interview
In late January this year, Williams made a guest appearance on Today, where Savannah Guthrie tried her best to get a concrete answer from the tennis legend to put the comeback speculation to bed once and for all. However, the former No. 1 wasn’t in any mood to give a direct answer, and the one that she eventually did give didn’t really make anything clear as to whether she is considering a return to competitive tennis. Williams said:
“Really? You’re asking this on the Today show? Oh my God! Is that a no? All you people on the set are laughing, it’s distracting. I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now. That’s not a yes or no. I don’t know. I’m just going to see what happens. That’s not a maybe. Listen, I have two kids. I’m a full-time stay-at-home mom. When I filled out a form the other day for occupation, I wrote housewife.”
On the back of Williams’ unclear answer, Czech-American women’s tennis icon Martina Navratilova playfully suggested that the 23-time singles Slam winner should be a politician. Williams retired at the 2022 US Open after suffering an unexpected third-round defeat at the hands of Ajla Tomljanovic.
