Novak Djokovic Sees Rafael Nadal in His Mind Again After Surviving 4-Hour Marathon vs Jannik Sinner in Australian Open SF

Novak Djokovic dipped into his deepest memories to explain the emotions behind one of the most gruelling wins of his career. He edged past Jannik Sinner in a four-hour Australian Open semifinal that ended close to 2 am.

Djokovic and Sinner delivered commanding performances throughout the match. After a heated contest, the Serb won the second, fourth, and fifth sets, claiming the victory and securing a spot in the finals (3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4). Moments after sealing the win, Djokovic admitted the match instantly took him back to the 2012 Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal.

It was a six-hour epic that remains one of the most physically demanding matches in tennis history. Opening up about his emotions and recalling the match with the Spaniard during his on-court interview, he said:

“I’m lost for words right now, to be honest. Oh my god, it feels surreal to be honest. Playing 4 hours, it’s almost 2 am. Reminiscing, in 2012 I played Rafa in the final that was 6 hours almost,” said Novak Djokovic.

While the duration didn’t quite match that legendary night in Melnourne, the Serbian felt the same relentless intensity against a younger rival. He further urged the fans to applaud for Sinner, adding:

“But the level of intensity and quality of tennis was extremely high. I knew that was the only way for me to have a chance to win today against him. He won the last 5 matches against me. I told him at the net thanks for allowing me at least one the last couple years. I have tremendous respect for him. Incredible player, he pushes you to the limit, which is what he did tonight to me. So he deserves a great round of applause for his performance.”

With this win, Djokovic has moved one step closer to extending his historic legacy. If he claims the final round, it will mark her 25th Grand Slam victory.
