Matteo Berrettini Sends Unexpected Apology Message To Italian Actor After Crushing Daniil Medvedev In Monte-Carlo

Along with Matteo Berrettini’s dominance over former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the round of 32 at the Monte-Carlo Masters, his actions following the win also gained traction on social media. Berrertini clinched his first double bagel victory against Medvedev in just 49 minutes on Wednesday.

Medvedev entered the Monte Carlo Masters as the seventh seed before experiencing his first 6-0, 6-0 defeat in his opening round. The Russian tennis player was quite frustrated during the match, as he was seen smashing his racket seven times in less than an hour. However, what truly caught everyone’s attention was Berrettini’s message on the camera after advancing to the further round.

Berrertini signed the camera after his win and wrote “Scusa Carlo V,” leaving the fans in confusion. A few moments later, the current world No. 90 cleared the confusion, stating he was apologizing to his friend and Italian actor and screenwriter Carlo Verdone. He further revealed that Verdone is a huge fan of Medvedev, which the actor mentioned on Ale Cattelan’s Supernova podcast.

Matteo Berrertini further highlighted that he apologized to Verdone after besting the world No. 10, stating he wasn’t aware who the fellow countryman was supporting during the face off.

“The writing on the camera? It was for Carlo Verdone. I know he’s a fan of mine, but Medvedev is his favorite player, so I don’t know who he was rooting for today. That’s why I apologized to him.”

With the win, Matteo Berrettini became the fifth player to outpower a Top 10 opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, following Damir Keretic (1983), Ivan Lendl (1984), Roger Federer (2005), and David Goffin (2016).

Matteo Berrettini Reflects On His Win Against Daniil Medvedev

Matteo Berrettini defeated Daniil Medvedev comfortably. While the Italian did not record any double faults, Medvedev posted five. The former World No.1 put 36% of his first serves in play, while the Wimbledon finalist put 65%. Berrettini referred to his lead as one of the best performances of his life, stating:

“I think it was definitely one of the best performances of my life. I think I missed three shots in the whole match, and it’s not easy, especially against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect, and my weapons were working pretty well.

“I risked a little bit in the first game, facing two break points. After that, I felt I was playing better. I didn’t expect to win like that; it doesn’t happen often, but at the same time, I kept my focus because I know that tennis is a tricky sport. One break, two breaks, it’s not enough sometimes. I kept pushing, and I got the win.”

Matteo Berrettini will square off Joao Fonseca in the round of 16.
