Coco Gauff’s close-call semifinal loss to Karolina Muchova on Thursday has invited online hate directed toward Wimbledon’s Czech finalist by some fans. However, Serena Williams’ coach stepped in and called the toxic comments disrespectful while praising the dignity of both players, assuring that Gauff would completely disapprove of such comments.
Karolina Muchova edged past Coco Gauff at the SW19 semifinal in a thrilling 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) three-set victory. After the match, some fans took to social media and subjected the Czech finalist to online abuse, with some hoping that the Czech star would meet with a career-threatening injury.
A concerned fan on X then shared a screenshot of the comments, which caught the attention of Serena Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs. Stubbs, who coached Serena Williams at the 2022 US Open and helped guide her in her 2026 comeback, lambasted the comments, explaining that real sports fans would never stoop to such levels of disrespect.
“And Coco would be appalled at this. Absolutely disgraceful. One thing i can say about Coco and Karolina is they are genuinely two of the nicest young women on tour and are mutually respected. Coco or any player with their class would be appalled at these comments.”
Despite being critical of Gauff’s grass-court abilities, Stubbs had earlier praised her defensive resilience after her semifinal loss and has reiterated that the focus should remain on celebrating the fighting spirit of the two players.
Coco Gauff Praises Karolina Muchova While Addressing the Possibility of Receiving Online Hate
After her heartbreaking semifinal loss, Coco Gauff strongly took questions at the post-match conference and heaped praises on Muchova. The American admitted that Muchova has been one of the toughest players that she has faced on the tour.
She also mentioned how fun it was to battle the Czech-American in such a close-call match, as both players pushed each other to the absolute end.
Gauff had also predicted that she would receive online hate from bettors, who are destined to lose their wagers since her loss, but reminded the viewers that hate would only make her stronger.
While Muchova heads into her maiden Wimbledon final to battle fellow Czech star Linda Noskova, Gauff has assured that she will come back strong and find herself on the winning end next time.
