Jannik Sinner Indian Wells Draw: Next Opponent Revealed After 1R Bye

Jannik Sinner is the second seed in the 2026 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and therefore, he has received a bye from the first round. The top seed is Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.

His next opponent in the second round would be the Czech Republic’s Dalibor Svrcina. He entered the tournament as the qualifier and defeated Australia’s James Duckworth.

If Sinner manages to win against Svrcina in the second round, her third-round opponent could be one of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, and Tomás Martín Etcheverry. Assuming there are no upsets in the second and third rounds, Sinner’s Round of 16 opponent could be Karen Khachanov or João Fonseca, as these two players sit in the same section of the draw.

In the quarterfinals, Sinner could face a familiar foe, Ben Shelton. The two also faced each other in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where the Italian stamped his authority like he has been over Shelton for the past two years.

In the semifinal, he could face Alexander Zverev or fellow Italian Lorenzo Mussetti.

Tennis Analyst Shows Faith In Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner hasn’t seen his usual best since the grueling five-set loss to 38-year old Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open. In Doha, Sinner was surprisingly defeated by Jakub Mensik in three sets in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open. Both of these surprise defeats have raised question marks whether the Italian is still in his best version.

On Tennis Channel Live, analyst CoCo Vandeweghe suggested that Sinner is in the right mindset, citing his decision to come early to California and start his preparations for the Indian Wells.

“Well, what I love that he has done after that event, he immediately called up Darren and said, ‘ We’re going to come to Indian Wells early,” Vandeweghe said. “He’s already been here for a week, and that’s so important when it comes to the conditions that all these players are going to be talking about, the hot days where it is just absolutely ruthless and the ball is jumping all over the place, to the cold evenings, where the ball is really hard to move out here.

“And I think Jannik Sinner, the ultimate professional, like Chris was saying, I’m not worried one little bit. He’s going to improve where he needs to improve and feel better about himself, because losing Grand Slams in the finals is what Carlos and Jannik, that’s their pinnacle, and that’s always gonna take a little bit of time to just get over and feel confident about yourself again.”

The reigning Wimbledon champion made his debut at Indian Wells in 2021 and since then, he has posted a record of 11-3. The Italian has never advanced past the semifinals which he aims to change this season.
