Southern California native Marcos Giron had a familiar face in his box, as eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi witnessed his compatriot win his round-of-128 match against Mariano Navone at Indian Wells on Wednesday. This was not the first time Agassi had been in Giron’s box. He watched the 32-year-old win his maiden ATP title in Newport two years ago.
Besides Agassi, his daughter Jaz, and fitness trainer Gil Reyes were also present in the players’ box. Giron’s partnership with Agassi began in 2020, when he, alongside fellow American Sebastian Korda, invited Giron to Las Vegas for a training session.
Remembering the times Agassi mentored and witnessed him play at Newport and Las Vegas, Giron said in his post-match interview:
“He happened to be in Newport, Rhode Island, when I won the tournament. He was there for one of the matches, and it kind of worked out, my only title… I didn’t necessarily expect it, but it was special to be there with him, truly.”
“I went out there to Vegas, and I got asked to come out and practice. And so from there I have the relationship, and he’s given some thought to my game,” he added.

Giron was asked about the positive impact that Agassi has had over his career since becoming his unofficial mentor. The American was quick to praise Agassi, explaining how he helped him evolve as a player, and expressed gratitude to the legend for attending the match on Wednesday.
“I think when you talk about Andre, No. 1 in the world for I don’t know how many weeks and eight Slams, 60 titles, all of that. He sees the game on a different level. And so I am fortunate to have a very good relationship with him, and he’s been so kind in sharing his opinion. It’s been really good,” Giron said.
“A lot of ways. Getting me to be more aggressive, to see more opportunities on the court, from all over the court. I think he’s really had a huge impact on my career,” he added.
Giron will be facing hard-hitting Czech youngster Jakub Mensik in the round-of-64 clash in the Indian Wells Open on Friday.
