Jannik Sinner Confirms Monte-Carlo Masters Participation: All Scenarios For World No. 1 Fight With Carlos Alcaraz Explained

Jannik Sinner will compete at the Monte-Carlo Masters while setting the stage for a highly anticipated battle with Carlos Alcaraz for the World No. 1 ranking. Both the Italian and Spanish tennis stars will compete in Monaco after their runs at the Miami Open, where Sinner lifted the cup, and Alcaraz suffered a blow in his second round.

Sinner and Alcaraz will headline the tournament, with the former entering as the second seed and the latter competing to defend his title with a world ranking of 1. Following his win at the Sunshine Double, Sinner has closed the gap between himself and Alcaraz, trailing only 1,190 points.

The Spanish tennis sensation entered the Indian Wells Masters by leading Sinner with 3,150 points and defending 410 points.

However, following his semifinal exit at the Indian Wells Masters against Daniil Medvedev and against Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Miami Open, Alcaraz opened the possibility of Sinner surpassing him in the world ranking. By winning the Sunshine Double, Sinner added 2,000 points.

Along with his performance, Sinner’s return to World No.1 will also depend on his rival’s exit at the Monte-Carlo Masters. The possibilities of Sinner returning to top ranking are in the following situations:

    • He beats Carlos in the final.
    • If he gets to the final and Carlos loses in the semifinals.
    • If he reaches the semifinals and Carlos loses before the semifinals.

In any of these mentioned cases, if Sinner surpasses Alcaraz, he will reclaim the No 1 spot.

Jannik Sinner Opens Up On Battle For World No.1 With Carlos Alcaraz

Before making his run at the 2026 Monte Carlo Masters, Jannik Sinner stated that the rankings are based on individual players and that they should reflect how well the players perform. He also praised Carlos Alcaraz’s impressive skills, while highlighting the Spaniard’s consistency and emphasizing his opponent’s strength on clay courts.

“I think it’s all individual, our sport, that it’s very tough. As I said, you know, things don’t change as how I see. You know, the big picture for me is depending on how I play, and that should be the ranking. Carlos, he has been so consistent, you know, for so, so long. Now we go on clay, you know, where we all know how strong he is there.”

Alcaraz will kick off his 65th week as World No. 1 on Monday, only one week behind Sinner’s 66 weeks. Jannik Sinner became the first male in tennis history to win the Sunshine Double without dropping a set.
