John McEnroe snapped at a question about Serena Williams’ future
John McEnroe recently declined to speculate on Serena Williams’ future in tennis following her first-round exit at Wimbledon. After the American lost to Maya Joint in her first singles match since returning to the sport following a four-year break, the former world No. 1, who is serving as a BBC commentator at the tournament, was asked by commentator Nick Mullins whether Williams would come back on the court next year.
Refusing to respond to this question, McEnroe said:
“You think I know? Don’t ask me a question that’s unanswerable.”
Replying to the American’s answer, Mullins said:
“We’re just speculating, John, don’t look at me like that. It’s what we do, it’s our job.”
John McEnroe retired from tennis at the end of 1992 after competing at the US Open. Following tennis, he transitioned into a television broadcaster and commentator.
