Prior to Serena Williams announcing her Wimbledon exit, the All-England Club had rescheduled her doubles match from Friday to Saturday. This became the tournament’s most talked-about issue, with insider analysts questioning the decision and fans divided over claims of special treatment.
Recently, analyst Chris Kneebone joined the “Tennis Weekly” podcast and ignited a fierce debate when he questioned Wimbledon’s decision to reschedule Williams’ doubles match one day after all the women’s first-round doubles action concluded. He said this would set a “dangerous precedent” in the future, as it would place stature over fairness.
“Every single other women’s doubles match is now complete from the first round, except for this one, the only match being played on Saturday,” Kneebone said. “It sets a dangerous precedent. Do we want to see Serena Williams play doubles? Yes, we do, but at the same time, it doesn’t feel like these allowances are often made for other players.”
He also directed his criticism to Williams, saying that legendary status should not be a license to access preferential treatments, as no player is bigger than the tournament’s draw. Kneebone said:
“I think, as legends of the game, you can still behave in a humble way because she’s such a great player, you can do certain things that others aren’t because of what you achieved. I do understand the status that you have, but I think then there’s kind of throwing your weight around a little bit too much when it comes to this. Again, no player is bigger than the draw, and no player is more important in the tournament draw than anyone else.”
Kneebone’s words have now garnered mixed reactions from fans online, with one section strongly aligning with his point of bringing fairness into the tournament, while a few have defended Williams.

Wimbledon had decided to reschedule the doubles match after Williams reportedly suffered a knee injury during her singles match against Maya Joint on Tuesday. The American legend has, however, announced her departure from SW19 due to the knee injury sustained during her first-round match against Joint.
Serena Williams’ Upset Loss in the First Round of Wimbledon
Serena Williams’ entry to Wimbledon was the most anticipated event of this grass-court season. However, the wilderness surrounding the run was cut short by a determined Maya Joint, who survived a grueling three-set match with the returning legend and ultimately took home the win.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion lost the first set 3-6 but emerged strong during the second set, forcing it into a tiebreaker. After two hours, Williams started to lag physically as she ended up losing three games in a row, which ultimately gave Joint the biggest win of her career: 6-3, 6-7 (8-6), 6-3.
