Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, reacted to Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner’s late withdrawals from the Canadian Open.
The tournament is scheduled to be held from August 1 to August 12 at the IGA Stadium in Montreal for the men’s event and at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto for the women’s event. With less than a week remaining before the tournament begins, both Djokovic and Sinner announced their withdrawals.
The Serbian cited the need to manage his overall tournament workload and schedule, while the Italian withdrew to prioritize his health. Shortly after the announcements, Gilbert shared his take on the withdrawals on Monday. Dropping a four-word reaction, he wrote on X:
“Massive bummer for tournament 🏟️”
Sinner issued a statement confirming his withdrawal from the Canadian Open. He said:
“After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal. It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health. I’m disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future,” said Sinner.
The tournament organizers also expressed their disappointment over the late withdrawals, noting that both Sinner and Djokovic had also pulled out of the Canadian Open last year.
Coco Gauff’s ex-coach shared his take on Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic ahead of their clash at the Wimbledon Championships
Ahead of Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic’s clash at Wimbledon’s semifinal on July 10, Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, shared his thoughts on the matchup. Despite Sinner’s disappointing French Open campaign, the former coach favored the Italian over the Serbian. Speaking on Gill Gross’ YouTube channel, he said:
“I feel like Sinner has not played superlative tennis this tournament, especially with the forehand. He has made more errors off the forehand and he is not bone crushing the forehand from the middle of the court. But he has got better his last couple of matches. Struff is a tricky one because he gives you no rhythm; he plays big, but still he is nowhere near what we saw in Indian Wells, in Miami, and Monte Carlo,” said Coco Gauff’s ex-coach.
He added:
“He needs to be better but if it was a football game, I’ve got Sinner as a 2.5-3 point favourite.”
Jannik Sinner eventually delivered a strong performance and gracefully defended his title by defeating Alexander Zverev in the final round on July 12 at the Centre Court.
