Carlos Alcaraz’s wrist injury has garnered reactions from prominent tennis stars ever since speculation about his comeback started gathering pace. The latest to weigh in is Kyle Edmund, a former British tennis player who has delivered a brutal dose of reality to the Spaniard, asking him not to rush his return ahead of the US Open, for which the Spaniard’s participation remains uncertain.
Edmund knows all too well how injuries can derail a career, as the former British No. 1 faced several career-threatening injuries, particularly in his left knee, which ultimately forced him into retirement at age 30. According to Tennis World USA, Edmund backed Alcaraz’s team’s decision not to rush his return but to give his body time to heal on its own. Edmund also highlighted how severe his injury must have been, considering Alcaraz missed two Grand Slams in a row.
“Carlos’ injury does not look like a minor one; it seems serious, because he had to stop for quite a while and miss major tournaments. When you miss them, it’s serious. For these players, it’s their job: to win big tournaments.”
Edmund believes that a return too early might only increase the setbacks. He emphasized that a wrist injury is not a minor incident to shrug off. Rehabilitation can be tricky and sometimes even when the wrist feels good, it may not be fully healed.
Alcaraz would require total structural healing, according to the Brit, which would actually align with the Spaniard’s style of play, which is intense and high-speed.
“He will come back when he is ready, and his playing style is so explosive and physical that he should not have any doubts in his mind. He needs to be able to trust his body,” said Edmund.
Kyle Edmund Backs Carlos Alcaraz’s Private Rehab Process
Despite occasionally treating his fans with his practice sessions online, Carlos Alcaraz has largely kept his rehab process private. Drawing on this, Edmund strongly backed the Spaniard for a total media lockdown on his behind-the-scenes rehab process.
“I think he has been quite private about it in public – rightly so; it’s a personal matter. I do not know exactly what it is, or how it happened.”
Alcaraz suffered a wrist injury in April during the Barcelona Open and has been out of action ever since.
