Venus Williams dropped an honest assessment of her sister Serena Williams’ comeback journey during a press conference. The veteran Williams said that the former World No. 1 was “very unlucky” in the way things turned out but also praised Serena’s performance since her comeback and specifically hailed her level against Maya Joint at Wimbledon.
Venus Williams is all set to begin her singles and doubles campaign at the Mubadala DC Open in a few hours, and along the way, the tennis legend stopped by for a press conference. As per a source on X, when Venus was asked to give her thoughts on Serena’s comeback performance at age 44, Venus did not hold back her praise for the 23-time Grand Slam champion, describing Serena’s level as “extraordinarily high.”
“She played stellar in that match. I think her level was so extraordinarily high. It was very unlucky. Sometimes you play players who are on fire, and they don’t seem to maintain that level afterwards. You’ll have to ask her what’s next, but she looks great.”
Serena had played and won her first comeback match at the Queen’s Club tournament earlier this June, teaming up with Victoria Mboko, but failed to progress further.
The veteran also faced Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon but lost to the rising Australian star in three sets. Mid-match, Williams had also suffered a severe knee injury, which later became the cause behind her complete withdrawal from Wimbledon this year.
Serena and Venus Williams’ Wimbledon Doubles Reunion Cut Short Due to Injury
Both the Williams sisters had received a main wildcard from Wimbledon to launch their highly anticipated doubles campaign at this year’s Wimbledon. They were scheduled to play against Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. However, the reunion got tragically cut short after Serena suffered a knee injury during her singles match against Maya Joint.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion also did not attend the mandatory post-match press conference and, later that day, disclosed an emotional statement, which confirmed her withdrawal from her SW19 doubles campaign. However, Serena had left the tennis community with an optimistic note at the end, which suggested that the returning legend could make a comeback sometime during the hard-court season.
While Serena’s comeback remains uncertain, Venus is actively pushing her on-court momentum forward to the North American hard courts. After losing Alexandra Eala as a partner from the Mubadala DC Open’s doubles draw, Venus will now play alongside Diana Shnaider and will also face Anastasia Potapova in the first-round singles clash.
