Carlos Alcaraz attended the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid along with his family and team. The Spaniard won the World Sportsman of the Year award after a dominant 2025 season that saw him win two Grand Slams and numerous ATP titles.
Alcaraz also ended the year as World No. 1 and only recently, after losing the 2026 Monte-Carlo finals to Jannik Sinner, did he lose that ranking.
Alcaraz’s mother, Virginia Garfia Escandon, was also present at the venue, and she stole the spotlight with her shining dress. She posed alongside Alcaraz’s team members, including his brothers, Sergio and Jaime. One fan on the internet was mesmerized seeing “mamacaraz”:

Alcaraz joins fellow tennis legends Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal to be recognized with such an honor. Notably, Djokovic was co-hosting the show in Madrid.
Carlos Alcaraz’s Gratitude-Filled Speech After Being Honored at 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards
After being honored with the World Sportsman of the Year award for his performance last season, Carlos Alcaraz spoke at length about his incredible season. Alcaraz won the 2025 French Open, where he defended the match point against Jannik Sinner before winning the title in the fifth set. He defeated the Italian at the 2025 US Open finals as well.
In his acceptance speech, Alcaraz threw light on the people who are working with him so that he can be at his peak levels at all times.
“This award recognizes my 2025 season, a season that was full of unforgettable moments for me,” Alcaraz said. “Winning two Grand Slams and finishing the year as number one is something I dreamed of since I was a little child. But when I look back, I not only think about the trophies and the results. I think about the journey, the work, the challenging moments, the people who were by my side, and everything I learned during the process.
“And, honestly, that’s why this award is so exciting for me. It’s a dream, a true dream. Something I never would have imagined when I was a kid who simply loved tennis and enjoyed every time I stepped on the court.”
Noticeably, Alcaraz was seen wearing a cast on his right wrist, which is a cause of concern for him going ahead in his clay season. After dropping out of Barcelona after the opening round match, Alcaraz has decided to skip the tournament in Madrid and is questionable to participate in Roland Garros this year.
