Patrick Mouratoglou Makes Excellent Case For Why Jannik Sinner Is Really Like Rafael Nadal & Why Carlos Alcaraz Isn’t

Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has likened Jannik Sinner’s gameplay to Novak Djokovic’s and his mindset to Rafael Nadal’s. In their most recent meeting in the Monte Carlo Masters final, Sinner outplayed Alcaraz, denying the Spaniard a title defense, securing a straight-sets win, and reclaiming the top rank in men’s tennis.

In his latest analysis, Mouratoglou praised Sinner for his dominant run at the Masters 1000 level on tour this season and explained how the Italian’s mindset differs from that of his top on-court rival, Carlos Alcaraz, whom he described as a more fun-seeking player. Alcaraz leads the Lexus ATP head-to-head tie against Sinner 10-7.

“Everybody compares Jannik with Novak Djokovic for reasons that are quite obvious. The style of the game, and to me, the mindset of Jannik Sinner, is the same as that of Rafael Nadal. They have something in common that is incredible and so rare. The ability to play every single shot from January 1 to December 31 with 100% commitment, focus, and intensity. So rare!” Mouratoglou said.

“And that explains why he won 10 sets in a row at the ATP Finals, plus 37 in a row in Masters 1000. Rolex Paris Masters, ATP Finals, Indian Wells, Miami, and one match at Monte Carlo, which is 47 sets in a row without losing one. That is completely crazy, and if you compare it with Alcaraz, Alcaraz doesn’t have the same mindset. I am not saying that Sinner is superior; they just have a different mindset,” he added.

“He has to have fun on the court. When he has fun on the court, it’s unbelievable, but when you have fun, it’s about how he feels emotionally. If he’s in the mindset of playing and enjoying, he’s unbelievable; if not, then he is not so unbelievable but still a great player,” the Frenchman concluded.

Jannik Sinner Chases Rare Feat at Madrid Open

Sinner is on a hot streak, winning four straight Masters 1000-level titles dating back to last year’s Paris Masters and his recent triumph in Monte Carlo. Sandwiched between the two are the Miami and Indian Wells Masters (Sunshine Double), which he won last month.

Now with Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz announcing their withdrawals from the Mutua Madrid Masters, the Italian has gone the other way by entering the main draw, in an attempt to achieve the rare feat of winning five Masters 1000-level titles in a row, and his second on clay this season.

The Italian Open will follow the Madrid Open in Rome, the last tournament before the players head to Paris for the French Open.
