Reigning Dallas Open champion Ben Shelton made a winning start at the BMW Open in Munich, defeating fellow American Emilio Nava in the opening round, though fans reacted to his outfit. The 23-year-old will now face Belgian rising star Alexander Blockx in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
Shelton was the No. 1 seed at the Houston Open but suffered a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Agustin Tirante, raising questions about his form since winning the ATP 500 title in Dallas. Now, the questions aren’t just about his inconsistencies on tour, but also about his latest gameday outfit in Munich.
After Shelton’s latest outfit for the BMW Open was revealed on social media, fans online didn’t hold back, trolling the American.
“This actually doesn’t look good at all lol,” one fan commented.
“He looks a mess,” another fan commented.
“This is awful,” yet another fan commented.
“The f*** is this?” one fan commented.
“This is the stuff conspiracy theorists are talking about when they say lizard people walk among us,” another fan commented.
“Pulling up to the driving range more like,” yet another fan commented.
Ben Shelton Called Emilio Nava His ‘Best Friend’ on Tour After Their BMW Open Opener
After his opening round win against Nava in the BMW Open, Shelton showered praise over his fellow countryman, calling him his “best friend” on the ATP circuit.
“Yeah, it’s tough. Not just another American, but probably my best friend out on tour, one of a few. His trajectory has been steep lately, so happy to see the way that he’s been climbing,” Shelton said in the on-court interview.
“I know he wasn’t feeling 100% today, so I feel bad about that. You know, hope he gets back to 100% quickly, because he’s playing great on the clay… I’m really happy, you know, starting my run here in Munich, it’s a special place for me, and just excited to keep it going,” he added.
Shelton will face Blockx for the first time on tour in their round-of-16 clash on Wednesday. He will be hoping to reach the final of the BMW Open for a second year running and maybe claim his second ATP 500 title of the season.
