Martina Navratilova reacted to England’s loss to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinals, opening up about what mistake led to the upset.
England’s World Cup journey ended on Wednesday with a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, who scored twice in the final seven minutes to book their place in the final. England had been on course to reach their first men’s World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute.
After taking the lead, England adopted a more defensive approach. Manager Thomas Tuchel introduced three defenders and switched to a 5-4-1 formation to protect the advantage. The tactical change allowed Argentina to dominate possession and eventually score twice late in the match.
Following the defeat, comedian David Baddiel shared his take on the tactical shift on X, drawing the attention of Martina Navratilova. Reacting to it, the former tennis player wrote:
“At the top level, playing not to lose loses most of the time..”
Martina Navratilova weighed in on Chris Evert’s new cancer diagnosis during Netflix filming
Martina Navratilova recently spoke to the Tennis Channel about learning of Chris Evert’s third cancer diagnosis while filming the Netflix documentary series, ‘Chris & Martina: The Final Set,’ which was released on June 26, 2026.
She revealed that Evert was undergoing treatment during filming, making the documentary more authentic and emotional.
“We started with a different director who then kind of quit so that was delayed a little bit. And then of course Chris was diagnosed again. So she was going through the actual treatment during the filming of the documentary which made it that much more raw and true and honest but it was an interesting process. I think I didn’t realize how vulnerable we would both be and look but we weren’t thinking about it. We just wanted to bring kind of reality to our relationship and bring it out in the open,” said Martina Navratilova.
She added:
“then most of all it was about friendship that you can be friends with your enemy or biggest adversary and women can do that… and then also it was about raising awareness about cancer genetic testing getting the yearly checkup etc. So it kind of spanned a lot of topics but we felt we had something to say.”
Martina Navratilova was recently moved to tears at the Wimbledon women’s singles final after Linda Noskova paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother following her victory over Karolina Muchova.
