The 114th edition of the Australian Open begins in two days, with the world’s top players, from Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, ready to duke it out at the first Grand Slam of the year.
The draw for the tournament was announced on Thursday, January 15, with the main draw matches set to begin on Sunday, January 18, and continue through February 1.
On the men’s side, World No. 1 Alcaraz is chasing his maiden Australian Open title, which would make him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam. Two-time defending champion and second seed Sinner will be aiming for his fifth Grand Slam overall, moving closer to Alcaraz’s tally of six.
Last year’s finalist, Alexander Zverev, is the third seed, while Novak Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, is seeded fourth. The Serb is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam overall.
Rounding out the top eight seeds are Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Ben Shelton. Stanislas Wawrinka, the 2014 champion, will also compete in what is his final Australian Open. He will retire at the end of the season.
On the women’s side, Sabalenka and Swiatek headline as the top two seeds. Two-time Australian Open champion Sabalenka has won 20 of her past 21 matches in Melbourne and enters the tournament as the favorite. Swiatek, like Alcaraz, is aiming to complete a career Grand Slam, with the Australian Open the only Major missing from her resume.
Coco Gauff is the third seed. Her best result at Melbourne Park is a semifinal appearance, and she will aim to reach her first Australian Open final and win it. Fourth seed Amanda Anisimova, who won 12 of her last 14 Grand Slam matches and reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals last year, will look to go one step further in Melbourne.
Rounding out the top eight seeds are Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Mirra Andreeva. Defending champion Madison Keys is seeded ninth, while Belinda Bencic, who has made a remarkable comeback, rising from world No. 487 at the start of last year to No. 10 after her standout performance at the United Cup, enters as an outside favorite.
