A tennis analyst has raised an alarm for racism, claiming that the only reason why Coco Gauff’s tennis IQ is not celebrated enough is that she is black.
Gauff turned pro in 2018 and made her WTA debut a year later. She was just 18 when she broke into the Top 10 in September 2022. In a couple of months, the American will turn 22, but she already has an impressive resume that includes two Grand Slams and three WTA 1000 titles. She also won the year-end championship in 2024.
However, many believe that the World No. 3 doesn’t get the credit she deserves for her shrewd strategies to outsmart her opponents. The latest to say this is Lucy Khadija of Black Spin Global, a media outlet that hypes black tennis players.
On Saturday, January 10, Khadija took to her X handle (Dr. Lumar) to write:
“Coco doesn’t get enough credit when it comes to her tennis IQ. Like people mention everything else but that.”
A user agreed with her and remarked that it was because Coco Gauff was black,
“It’s bc she’s b- *signal drops*,” they wrote.
Khadija responded to the user, writing:
“DONT LET THEM SILENCE YOU!!!!!!!!”
One of the jolliest players on the tour, Gauff has also started attracting endorsement deals from renowned brands, such as Mercedes-Benz.
Coco Gauff Gets 4th Consecutive Win against Iga Swiatek
When Team USA squared off against Team Poland in the 2026 United Cup semifinals on Saturday, January 10, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek faced each other for the 16th time on the tour.
Gauff defeated the Pole 6-4, 6-2, making it four consecutive wins against the former World No. 1.
At the post-match press conference, the American said (via Yahoo Sports):
“I didn’t let the opportunities that I had in the first two times I had match points get away from me. She played well, maybe there was one error with the backhand, but after that, she played better tennis, but I knew that if I was playing like this throughout this match, that eventually it would happen.”
Nevertheless, Poland defeated the defending champions and went on to win the mixed-team tournament, as they beat Switzerland in the final.
Meanwhile, Swiatek still leads the head-to-head against Gauff 11-5. Surprisingly, only one of their 16 clashes has gone to the third set.
